First and Second Year Papers & Research Proposal:

  • "First Year Field Statement" due in the Spring semester of the first year
  • "Second Year Field Statement" due in the Spring semester of the second year
  • Dissertation Research Proposal due no later than the Spring semester of the third year

  • First Year Field Statement completed (no course credit)

Year Two (typically TA)

21 course credits (3 of which are for 2nd Year Field Statement) + up to a maximum of 6 research credits in summer (max. 24)

Fall (9 course credits)

  • 9 course credits

Spring (12 course credits)

  • 9 course credits
  • 3 credits for Second Year Field Statement completed (16:070:600)

Summer

6 research credits – pre-dissertation research (field, lab, museum), language training, grant proposal writing, independent study, etc.

Year Three (typically TA)

6 course credits + up to 9 research credits

Fall:

  • 3 course credits for dissertation proposal writing
  • 6 empty credits for TA
  • 3 research credits

Spring:

  • 6 empty credits for TA
  • 3 course credits for dissertation proposal writing or 3 credits independent study (optional)
  • Defend research proposal

Summer

  • 6 research credits – fieldwork

By end of Year 3 (including the summer following the third academic year), each student will
have accumulated 45 course credits plus 15 research credits and will need only 12 more research
credits.

Year Four (Fellowship, TAship or External)

  • 2 research credits
  • Field research

Year Five (Fellowship, TAship, Other Internal, or External)

  • 6-10 research credits
  • Dissertation write up

Year Six, if necessary (Fellowship, TAship, Other Internal or External)

  • 6 research credits
  • Defend dissertation; publish articles; apply for jobs; etc.
