At Rutgers University, a student is accepted into the Ph.D. program in Anthropology on the basis of an outstanding undergraduate record; the promise of making an outstanding contribution to the field; creativity and focus of the student's proposed dissertation research, and because her/his interests match well the expertise of one or more members of the Graduate Faculty in Anthropology.

Students interested in joining our community of scholars are strongly encouraged to identify and contact any individual faculty members with whom they would be interested in working, to discuss their potential fit with the program and the faculty member as advisor, prior to applying.

As of Fall 2019, Ph.D. program in Anthropology (both CITE and HES programs) no longer will consider or require GREs to be submitted with the application. Thus, you do not need to take the test or submit test results. 

Application deadlines for the Ph.D. program in Anthropology the fall term are December 15 of each year. Students requesting financial aid or university funding packages must apply by December 15.

M.A. in Anthropology

The Graduate Program in Anthropology has recently revived its terminal MA degree. Like the Ph.D. program, a student is accepted in the MA program on the basis of an outstanding undergraduate record; strong GRE scores; strong letters of recommendation; and because her/his interests match well with the expertise of one or more members of the Graduate Faculty in Anthropology.
